Senior year is such an exciting time, and your senior pictures should reflect exactly who you are in this season of life. During every senior consultation, I walk my clients through some of my favorite tips to help them feel confident, prepared, and ready to shine on the big day. After photographing seniors for over a decade, I’ve learned that the smallest details can make the biggest difference. Here are my top 5 tips for nailing your senior pictures:
1. Have an Idea of the Look You’re Going For
Before your session, start thinking about the vibe you want your senior photos to have. Do you see yourself downtown surrounded by city streets and architecture? Or do you dream of running through wide-open fields with golden light pouring through? Your location choice makes a huge impact on the overall feel of your session, and the season matters too— summer offers lush greens and flowers, fall gives you those warm golden tones and cooler temps everyone loves, and spring helps you put the finishing touches on your senior year with sports, cap & gown and future college t-shirts minis. We’ll go over all of this in your consultation to make sure the session feels true to you.
2. Consider Professional Hair & Makeup
This one can be a game-changer. Hair and makeup professionals know how to create a polished, picture-ready look that will last through wind, humidity, and hours of shooting. Curls tend to fall flat quickly outdoors, and makeup that looks great in person doesn’t always translate on camera. A pro will take your natural beauty and elevate it just enough so you look polished, confident, and radiant in every shot.
3. Outfits Matter—A Lot
I can’t stress this enough: your outfit choices can completely make or break your session. The goal is for you to feel confident, comfortable, and authentic in what you wear. Fit and color are key—they need to flatter your shape and skin tone, and I’m always here to guide you through that process. My background in fashion merchandising (plus years of styling clients and seeing what works and doesn't work) means I can help you choose pieces that truly highlight your best features. What works beautifully for one client won’t necessarily work for the next, and that’s where my expertise comes in.
4. Pay Attention to the Details
The little things really do matter. Wrinkled clothing is one of my biggest pet peeves—and it’s not easy to Photoshop out—so please iron or steam your outfits the night before. Nails are another detail people often overlook, but they will show in your photos! You don’t have to have a manicure, but clean nails or neutral polish are best. Stay away from bold or neon colors that might distract. And don’t forget your toes—we may go barefoot for a few shots!
5. Be Prepared, but Don’t Stress
Preparation makes everything smoother, but remember—your session is supposed to be fun! Pack everything the night before: jewelry, belts, proper undergarments for each outfit, a brush or comb, extra lipstick or gloss, even backup accessories. Hang your outfits to avoid wrinkles, and wear something comfy to the session so you can change when you arrive. Get a good night’s rest, don’t overindulge the day before, and come ready to laugh, move, and enjoy the process.
And if you do feel overwhelmed? Text or call me! I used to be a wedding photographer for over a decade, and if there’s one thing I’m good at, it’s staying calm under pressure. I’ll be there every step of the way—helping with posing, hair, styling, and all the little fixes. Plus, if something small gets overlooked, Photoshop is always on our side. 😉
Final Thoughts
Senior pictures are about celebrating you—your personality, your style, and this amazing milestone. With a little preparation and trust in the process, your session will be relaxed, fun, and full of images you’ll treasure forever.
